Immigration law: Young girl detained after gallbladder surgery

The idea of facing legal proceedings due to immigration issues can be intimidating. Individuals without the right information may feel that they have little hope of achieving favorable outcomes once deportation proceedings begin. Because immigration law is a complicated legal area, concerned Louisiana residents may want to consider gaining assistance.

One family in another state may be hoping to enlist help after a 10-year-old girl was put in immigration detention. Reports stated that the young girl has cerebral palsy and had just undergone gallbladder surgery when she was detained. Apparently, after being medically released from the hospital, she was taken to a children's shelter due to not having proper immigration documents. She was transported to the shelter by ambulance.

An attorney asked that federal agents allow the young girl to be released to the custody of relatives who are citizens, but the request was denied. She is to be processed through deportation proceedings. The report stated that the federal agents had waited outside the child's recovery room after her surgery because they had become aware of her improper status after she went through a Border Patrol checkpoint on her way to the hospital. It was also noted that the Department of Homeland Security will work to decide whether the child can be released to her family.

Families facing such situations may understandably feel overwhelmed and concerned. Without knowing their options and how to properly handle such proceedings, many Louisiana residents may feel that they can do nothing. However, concerned parties could speak with attorneys knowledgeable in immigration law who could potentially provide information on viable options for handling such a difficult predicament.
